Spiders, Yahoos, and Gophers? Really?

Before there were spiders crawling on the WWWeb,
there were gophers, digging around for information!

Of course, now there are also "Webcrawlers" and "Yahoos"... and others running around, doing our go-fer-ing...


The World Wide Web is so vast and complex, we need some tools to help us find what we want to look for. Imagine a giant library without a card-catalog or a helpful librarian!

"Gophers" were some of the first, "easy to use" search tools, that allowed people to begin finding some sense of direction in the growing resources of the internet. "Gopher sites" began springing up all over the internet, sponsored by all sorts of groups and organizations to make their information, data and ideas accessible to others.

But most people who use the web today probably are not familiar with gopher sites (or veronica and archie searches!). Instead, we know the more familiar......
