Programs

Quinebaug Valley Community College has developed a variety of programs to meet the needs of our northeastern Connecticut community of learners. This region is a rural area, rich in natural beauty, but economically poor. Of the twelve community colleges in Connecticut, Quinebaug is the lowest funded. The college plays an important role in the economic development and retraining of employees in our service area. We have had a significant impact on encouraging more youth to continue with higher education. The faculty and staff are encouraged to explore innovative and creative methods to improve the delivery of education and service. We encourage you to visit our web site to view the many projects happening at QVCC. We'd like to highlight some of the special efforts that we believe make us a Champion College with the links listed at this site.

Opportunity for Success
This site will give visitors an overview of a project designed to improve the recruitment and retention of 17-21 year old students who have been identified with social, economic, and/or academic barriers that might prevent college success. Special features include motivation techniques, intensive advisement and support, and an industry-based mentoring program. This program has been successful in significantly increasing the retention rate for a group of students that might not have chosen to go to college.

Graduation Speaker Committee
Several years ago students suggested that they would rather hear from one of their own than an outside speaker at commencement. Rather than choosing the top student or student governance leader, QVCC developed a unique process that encourages the best speakers to compete for this opportunity. This site reviews the process.

Service Learning Program
QVCC has developed a service learning program to encourage students to participate in the community in ways that contribute to their learning process.
