Orientation to Healthcare
All prospective and current non-credit students interested in an allied healthcare career are welcome to attend this free open house!  Each of the five QVCC continuing education healthcare programs will be discussed in detail, including: Certified Nursing  Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Billing & Coding, Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  Additionally, high growth & high demand career opportunities in healthcare, salary & job placement opportunities, and financial aid assistance will be focal points of discussion.  All participants will be eligible for an individual career advising session with the Healthcare Career Advisor – John Mullane.  For general questions about QVCC non-credit programs or the open house, please contact Ian Canning, the Continuing Education Coordinator, Tel: (860) 412-7373;

Certified Nursing Assistant
This course will provide students with the required training to obtain C.N.A. certification in the state of Connecticut. Classroom lectures will cover all aspects of patient/resident care, including support for all activities of daily living, cultural diversity, death and dying, as well as managing a client with Alzheimer’s or dementia.  Price includes all textbooks and materials. May be eligible for WIA funds – contact CT Works. 

In order to register and successfully complete this course, students will be required to:

  • Provide a high school diploma or GED at the time of registration
  • Complete a total of 100 mandatory combined classroom and clinical hours to pass this course.  The current class schedules allow for students to miss up to one classroom session and one clinical date, but there will be NO make-up classes except for a medical condition with written documentation. 
  • Provide Health Certification and TB Testing forms prior to the start of clinical training.  These forms can be accessed directly from the Community & Professional Learning office or through the college website.  Failure to provide these forms before clinical rotation may result in removal from the class until the forms are completed.  No refund will be granted for classes missed. 
  • Lift at least 75 lbs in order to take part in clinical exercises.  Students should be prepared for considerable physical activity in this class.
  • Respect residents’ rights while undergoing clinical training.  Any blatant violation of this agreement during clinical rotation will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. 
Achieve a 60 average on all quizzes, a 70 or better on the written final, and pass the five primary clinical skills in order to receive certification and placement on the Connecticut C.N.A. registry.

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Exam Prep Course
This course will help prepare students to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam given by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). A review of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, ICD-9 codes, E/M (evaluation and management) codes, anesthesia, surgery, radiology, pathology, laboratory, and medicine services will be done in class – highlighting key points that may be on the 150-question exam. A “mock” 75-question exam will be reviewed during class with the instructor showing you the easiest way to approach each multiple choice question. Students should be prepared to bring the following books to class: 2008 ICD-9, 2008 CPT, 2008 HCPCS. The price below includes the AAPC Study Guide Bundle (approximately $146), which will be provided for each student on the first day of class. *** Prerequisite – Students must have completed the Medical Terminology, ICD-9, CPT, HCPCS, and Medical Billing & Coding courses OR have some coding and billing experience. Coming Fall 2008 - Dietary Assistant Certificate Program
Bridging the gap between allied health and nutritional services, Quinebaug Valley Community College’s upcoming Dietary Assistant Certificate program, will provide students with a stepping stone to an entry-level position or a 2-4 year nutrition degree program.  Dietary assistants play an important role in hospitals, long-term care facilities, day care facilities, school lunch programs, and public health offices.  Tasks may include: design of nutritional material, visiting patients for food preferences, monitoring food intake, tray set up according to therapeutic diets.  If you are interested in requesting more information on this upcoming program, please contact Ian Canning, the Continuing Education Coordinator at QVCC.  Tel: (860) 412-7373;

EKG Technician
This 50-hour intensive course prepares you to function as an EKG/cardiovascular technician and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam.  The EKG Technician is the person responsible for performing diagnostic tests to assess the heart rhythm and rate in patients.  EKG’s are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and when the doctor deems it necessary.  During this course, the instructor will cover such topics as cardiovascular anatomy and physiology; basic electrophysiology; the electrical conduction system; the electrocardiogram;  acute myocardial infarction; iscemia, injury and necrosis; interpretation of: inferior MIs, anterior MIs, septal MIs, lateral MIs, and posterior MIs; bundle branch blocks and axis deviations; therapeutic modalities; and cardiovascular pharmacology.  Students will practice the skills they’ve learned in practical labs and will briefly touch on the interpretation of an EKG strip.  The current class schedule allows for one missed class.

 

Medical Terminology
This 32-hour course will introduce students to the systems of the body and terminology related to each system, along with anatomy.  Common medical abbreviations of tests, diseases and procedures will be introduced.  Students will learn about the structure of medical words, including prefixes, suffixes, combining forms and how to decipher medical words. This course will be split between in-class lecture and online assignments to complete the hours.  **Note**: Medical Terminology must be taken concurrently with Medical Billing & Coding unless a student has obtained written authorization waiving the requirement from the Continuing Education Coordinator (860-412-7373).  Students must successfully pass a written test to obtain a waiver for this requirement.  Price includes textbooks and materials. Medical Insurance Billing is an in-demand field! No prior experience or terminology is required to work at a hospital, doctor’s office, or even in your home. You will learn about:

Medical Billing & Coding Certification (w/computer)
This 96-hour Medical Billing & Coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing and coding problems, to complete insurance claim forms, to trace delinquent claims, and to appeal denied claims.  The course covers the following areas: CPT Coding book (Introductions, guidelines, evaluation and management, surgery, radiology, laboratory and medicine procedures for physician billing); ICD-9 Coding Book (Introduction and guidelines for diagnosis coding and hospital procedure coding); the HCPCS Coding Manual for supplies; and learning the rules and regulations of the basic third party payers (insurances) and reimbursement.

Students will learn how to use each of the coding manuals with ease in looking up the proper procedure, diagnosis or supply code when billing for an insurance company.  Additionally, this course includes a computer lab module which simulates working at a doctor’s office using the computer; beginning with making appointments right through to sending claim forms and patient bills.

Veterinary Assistant
