Colloquia are used to organize group experiences that extend learning in a given field beyond the opportunities typically provided by formal courses.

Although students may work independently part of the time on topics of particular interest, it is expected that the topics will have a common thrust and that students will meet regularly as a group under instructor leadership.

Topics and emphasis in departmental colloquia may vary from semester to semester.

Colloquia are assigned a course designator of either 196 or 296.
