Long,
Wendy. Coping with melanoma and
other skin cancers. New York: The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc., 1999.
- Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. There are many different stages with
melanoma. Individuals that have
fair skin color that freckles easily and those who commonly have reddish,
blonde, strawberry blonde hair are the people that are more prone to
getting cancer. Moles are the
signs that you look for. If a
person has abnormal shaped looking moles or become very dark with
irregular edges it should be checked immediately by a dermatologist. Exposure to the sun is the main cause
of melanoma. There are many different
treatments. Surgically removing
the mole is one way of treating if diagnosed in the early stages. If it has not been treated in the early
stages some treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy,
or surgery. It is best for anyone
to avoid sun exposure in the midday hours. Sunscreen should always be applied every time one is out in
the sun.
- I feel that the whole subject of melanoma is scary because it is
so dangerous. A person never knows
how the sun affects the body until you read about it for yourself. Reading about the causes and different
types and stages of melanoma gives me a better understanding on what to
look for and how to protect my family and myself.
- The information was not confusing to me or contradictory. The information did not leave me with
any unanswered questions.
- I highlighted lots of different items in the text to help me get a
better understanding of melanoma skin cancer. The author did a good job of sectioning the text. The story was broken into self-explanatory
chapters.
- I located the material online through the library’s online catalog. I then had to go to the net library to
print some of the book.
