Research Project

Print this lab, follow the instructions below, and submit in the ENG* 073 “Drop-Off” folder.

Now that you have a topic for your research paper, you will need to narrow down your topic so it is not too broad.  One technique you can use to narrow down your research is brainstorming.  Begin by writing your topic down in the central "bubble.”  Try to capture your idea in one word or a phrase.  From the central idea, fill in the "bubbles" connected by spokes to the main topic with what you know about the topic.  Write down as much as you know, the more the better.

First, click here to look at an example of using the bubble chart to organize research on the topic of video games.

Second, you need to complete your own bubble chart using your own topic & research.  Click here for a blank bubble that you can print.

Now that you have written down all your thoughts and ideas, group or categorize the information that is similar into clusters.  Click here for an example of categorizing using the video game topic.

1.                  Are you beginning to see a pattern?

2.                  Is there any specific area that generates more interest in the subject? (Try to narrow down your choice to a specific area of interest within the general topic you have selected.)

You may want to discuss your ideas with your instructor or the lab assistants who may help you narrow down your topic.
