Problems 1-3 require information from the table below:

            Length:

            12 inches (in)= 1 foot

            3 feet = 1 yard

            36 inches = 1 yard

            5280 feet = 1 mile

Conversion of one unit of measurement to another unit of measurement is a exercise of equivalence. Note that length of the measurement below does not change. The original measure if multiplied by one, in the somewhat unusual form of:

3 feet

1 yard

This multiplication insures an equivalent measure named by a different unit.

            *Convert 12 yards to feet:

            *12 yards = (12 yards) (1) = 12 yards

                                (12 yards) (3 feet ) = 36 yards feet = 36 feet

                                                   1 yard          1 yard

1)      Convert 31 feet into yards.

2)      Covert 50 inches into feet and inches (express the remainder of the quotient)

3)      Convert 3520 yards into miles.

Problems 4 – 6 require information from the table below:

      Weight:

      16 ounces = 1 pound (lb)

      2000 lbs = I ton

Note the weight that follows does not change just the unit name which measures that weight:

*Convert 36 ounces to lbs and ounces:

      * (36 ounces) (  1 lb    ) = 32 (ounces)(lb)+4 ounces = 2lbs 4 ounces

                             16 ounces  16 (ounces)

4)      Convert 7000 lbs to tons.

5)      Find the difference between 14 lbs 5 oz and 8 lbs 14 oz

6)      A candy store buys candy weighing 12 lbs for $14.40. The candy is repackaged and sold in 6 oz. Packages for $1.15 each. Find the mark up on the 12 lbs of candy.

Problems 7-10 will require information from the table below:

      Capacity:

8 fluid ounces (fl. Oz.) = I cup

      2 c.= 1 pint (pt)

      2 pt = 1 quart (qt)

      4 qt= 1gallon (gal)

7)     Convert 1 quart to fluid ounces.

8)  Convert 16 cups to gallons.

9)     Convert  7 pints to cups.

10)  Convert 7 pints to quarts.
