NetPrep Introduction to Wide Area Networks

CSC 212

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course is about computer networks and how they are used to transmit information between computers, and ultimately between people. The focus of this course is wide area networks (WANs). Networks can be categorized into four major groups: LANs, campus networks, metropolitan area networks (MANs), and WANs. A WAN connects individual networks over long distances. A WAN typically connects two or more LANs using a particular type of service. There are many WAN services as we will see in this course.

KEY TOPICS

Development of the telecommunications network

Physical and virtual circuits

Analog and digital voice circuits

Wireless communications

Voice digitization

WAN devices

WAN protocols

Internet access methods

Voice over WAN technologies

Private VPNs

Remote Network Access technologies

Course Objectives:  By the end of the course the student should be able to:

·        Describe the development and operation of today’s telecommunications infrastructure

·        Identify the physical and logical technologies used for WAN communications

·        Apply physical layer technologies such as switched circuits, leased lines, T-carriers and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)

·        Apply Data Link Layer technologies such as HDLC, SLIP and PPP

·        Apply higher layer protocols including ISDN, Frame Relay and ATM

·        Identify layered WAN protocols used to support networking applications such as remote access, VPNs, and Voice over technologies

·        Combine WAN and LAN technologies to build an end-to-end, enterprise networking solution
