QVCC STUDENT ORGANIZES COLLECTION FOR FIRE VICTIMS

Jodi Miller, a student at Quinebaug Valley Community College, has organized a relief effort for the victims of last weekend’s devastating fire at the Peach Tree apartment complex in Norwich. Miller, a  Plainfield resident, not only knows one of the displaced residents, but she had worked for a professional cleaning service that counted the complex as one of its clients. "I developed a friendship with the property manager, the employees, and the residents of Peachtree," she said. "When I heard about the fire I couldn't believe it."

On Sunday, May 4, a U-Haul truck will be at the college from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to collect furniture, household goods, clothing, and other donations for the 100 plus people who were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Miller says that dishes, silverware, pots and pans, bedding, clothing, toiletries and slightly used furniture (beds, tables, chairs, lamps) are needed. Only usable items will be accepted.

Those who wish to make monetary donations can make them directly to the Red Cross by calling toll-free (877) 243-5727 or visiting www.charteroak.redcross.org. Monetary donations will not be accepted on Sunday. Miller also notes that the College will not be open. For more information contact Miller at jodi.miller5@gmail.com

STUDENT E-MAIL TRIGGERS VISIT FROM STATE REP. SHAWN JOHNSTON

Photo of Erick Thorstenson and Rep. Shawn JohnstonStudent letters and e-mails to members of the state government and legislature resulted in a visit to Erin Pagano’s macroeconomic class by Democratic State Representative Shawn Johnston on Monday, April 21st. As part of the “Poverty, Who Cares?” project at Quinebaug Valley Community College, students posed questions about the current level of state expenditures and whether it is improving the overall standard of living in this area of Connecticut. One of the few responses came to Erick Thorstenson, Thompson, CT, who did receive an initial reply to his e-mail, which was then followed up with the visit to the class. Read More
