Keeping it Local: former QVCC student returns as
instructor of
history in spring semester
Angela
Marie Ocasio, Willimantic, CT is an adjunct faculty member teaching United
States History II at the Quinebaug Valley Community College Willimantic
Center during the evening this spring semester. What makes Ocasio
unique? Ocasio is a graduate of Windham Technical High School, a 2002
graduate of QVCC and obtained her bachelor and master’s degree at Eastern
Connecticut State University.
Ocasio entered QVCC in the fall of 2000 under the Opportunity for Success (OFS) program. OFS is designed to assist a select group of 17 – 21 year old students, who have met a variety of criteria, be successful in their college experience. Assistance includes personal advising and mentoring, a freshman support class, work study and assistance in preparing college paperwork.
Ocasio interviewed for the teaching position with Assistant Professor of
Political Science, Jayne Battye who stated “Angela said without OFS Program
Coordinator Bob Fernandez’s guidance and general concern for her she would
not have made it through college”. Currently, two of Ocasio’s siblings
are OFS students at the Willimantic Center. Ocasio lives with her husband in
Willimantic and teaches history at Vinal Technical High School in
Middletown, CT.

The QVCC Willimantic Center is located at 729 Main Street in Willimantic,
CT. It was established in 1986 in an effort to provide educational
opportunities to residents in the southwestern corner of QVCC’s service
region and expanded in 2005. The Center houses 10 classrooms,
state-of-the art computer labs, a library and a student lounge.
