QVCC FILM SERIES EXAMINES ISSUE OF SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability, the concept of living locally and
thinking globally, is the theme of interdisciplinary teaching and learning
this year at Quinebaug Valley Community College.
This month the Humanities Lecture Series and the Multicultural Program
Planning Committee will sponsor a lunchtime film series on three consecutive
Thursdays at 12:00 noon.
“Sweating for a T-Shirt” will be shown on September 13. A well-produced
documentary and call to conscience and action, it centers on college
students enjoying their latest T-shirts, oblivious to the people who made
them – the exploited workers in Honduran maquilla or clothing factories who
earn only $3 a day.
On September 20, “The Future of Food” offers an in-depth investigation into
the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically-engineered
foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade.
The film examines the complex web of market and political forces that are
changing what we eat.
The final film, “Indigenous Peoples: Humane and Environmental
Sustainability,” will be shown on September 27. This award-winning
documentary highlights the thoughts and proposals of the Indigenous Peoples
in Johannesburg at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002.
The films will be shown in the Fireplace Lounge. Locally grown produce as
well as fair trade coffee and chocolate will be served. For more
information, contact Jayne Battye at 412-7254 or Nan Hirst at 412-7256.
