CCSA: Genevieve Triplett, SGA President at Three Rivers Community
College, came to visit and to tell us about their proposal for a Community
College Student Alliance on a federal level. Their main objective is to have
a Governing Student Association that would include most if not all
Connecticut community colleges. By doing so the group hopes that our
community colleges as a whole would be represented better on the state and
federal level. This is a political activist group, which involves issues
such as tuition, books, and student activities. There next meeting will be
held on May, 12th and 1:00pm at Three Rivers Community College, at the
Thames River Valley campus. They would appreciate any student involvement
from any community college.
Lion King: “Sold Out” Susan Harrod is going to ask for petty cash for the driver’s tip. Hillary Poudrette will be in charge of handing out the tickets on the bus.
Graduation Dinner Dance: A deposit has been made for the dinner dance to be held on May 26th at the Old Mill farm in Canterbury. Hillary Poudrette and Jenn Armstrong have volunteered to be in charge of decorations. There will be a DJ from 6-11pm. During the next meeting we will discuss the play list.
Relay for Life: There is no new information at this time.
Spring Flings: (Danielson, Willimantic April 12th.) On April 11th, Danielson is going to have a cookout, and Willimantic Center will be catered by Oobah’s Deli. Both campuses will host “Meet the Candidates”, in which videos of all candidates may be viewed.
Election of Officers: Elections will be held at both campuses on April 24th and 25th. SGA has also approved to have absentee ballets for those QVCC students that only have classes on the weekends and times other than the election. By doing so SGA hopes to do their best in giving all students a fair chance to vote.
Spring Time Festival Parade: There was no new information at this time.
Earth Week: Carole Blodgett has selected four movies to be played in Danielson (Winged Migration, March of the Penguins, Koyanisqatsi, and Powaqqatsi. She is putting up posters. There will also be a Day of Silence on Wednesday, April 26 by GSA. Josh is planning a clean up around the Willimantic Center with faculty member Bev York.
Discussion Board: Sue Corey is researching what other community colleges are doing.
Student Organizations: John Colbridge, a member from the group Soldiers Angels, came to the meeting to discuss funding for the semester. The group wanted $500.00 from SGA for fundraising and to attend planned events. John also went on to state that because the semester is already coming to a close he does not think the group plans on spending all $500.00. This motion was passed. In addition to this Jarrod Hebert from The Rotaract Club came to speak with us about getting this group recognized as an official student organization at QVCC. The club will officially begin with the fall semester. This group helps promote leadership and responsible citizenship as well as international peace and understanding, and is for 18 – 30 year olds. This motion was also passed.
Sue Corey reported on the True Colors Conference that she attended with Rebecca Shears as members of the Gay/Straight Alliance. Sue said that because of SGA funding the GSA and affording them the opportunity of attending the conference, they now have resources that they didn’t have before and some great networking and potential speakers to bring to QVCC.
Nicole Giles spoke about an event at the Danielson campus to get donations of dog food for the local shelter.
Multicultural Programming Planning Committee: Since today’s meeting ra over, Susan said she would post the minutes for the last meeting for anyone to read to save time.
